DETHRONED, by I.N. Potapenko
âWell?â Captain Zarubkinâs wife called out impatiently to her husband, rising from the sofa and turning to face him as he entered.
âHe doesnât know anything about it,â he replied indifferently, as if the matter were of no interest to him. Then he asked in a businesslike tone: âNothing for me from the office?â
âWhy should I know? Am I your errand boy?â
âHow they dilly-dally! If only the package doesnât come too late. Itâs so important!â
âIdiot!â
âWhoâs an idiot?â
âYou, with your indifference, your stupid egoism.â
The captain said nothing. He was neither surprised nor insulted. On the contrary, the smile on his face was as though he had received a compliment. These wifely animadversions, probably oft-heard, by no means interfered with his domestic peace.
âIt canât be that the man doesnât know when his wife is coming back home,â Mrs. Zarubkin continued excitedly. âSheâs written to him every day of the four months that sheâs been away. The postmaster told me so.â
âSemyonov! Ho, Semyonov! Has any one from the office been here?â
âI donât know, your Excellency,â came in a loud, clear voice from back of the room.
âWhy donât you know? Where have you been?â
âI went to Abramka, your Excellency.â
âThe tailor again?â
âYes, your Excellency, the tailor Abramka.â
The captain spat in annoyance.
âAnd where is Krynka?â
âHe went to market, your Excellency.â
âWas he told to go to market?â
âYes, your Excellency.â
The captain spat again.
âWhy do you keep spitting? Such vulgar manners!â his wife cried angrily. âYou behave at home like a drunken subaltern. You havenât the least consideration for your wife. You are so coarse in your behaviour towards me! Do, please, go to your office.â
âSemyonov.â
âYour Excellency?â
âIf the package comes, please have it sent back to the office and say Iâve gone there. And listen! Some one must always be here. I wonât have everybody out of the house at the same time. Do you hear?â
âYes, your Excellency.â
The captain put on his cap to go. In the doorway he turned and addressed his wife.
âPlease, Tasya, please donât send all the servants on your errands at the same time. Something important may turn up, and then thereâs nobody here to attend to it.â
He went out, and his wife remained reclining in the sofa corner as if his plea were no concern of hers. But scarcely had he left the house, when she called out:
âSemyonov, come here. Quick!â
A bare-footed unshaven man in dark blue pantaloons and cotton shirt presented himself. His stocky figure and red face made a wholesome appearance. He was the Captainâs orderly.
âAt your service, your Excellency.â
âListen, Semyonov, you donât seem to be stupid.â
âI donât know, your Excellency.â
âFor goodnessâ sake, drop âyour Excellency.â I am not your superior officer.â
âYes, your Excelââ
âIdiot!â
But the ladyâs manner toward the servant was far friendlier than toward her husband. Semyonov had it in his power to perform important services for her, while the captain had not come up to her expectations.
âListen, Semyonov, how do you and the doctorâs men get along together? Are you friendly?â
âYes, your Excellency.â
âIntolerable!â cried the lady, jumping up. âStop using that silly title.
